Skara Brae is a stone built Neolithic settlement located at the Bay of Skaill. It consists of 8 clustered houses and was occupied from 3180BC - 2500BC.

The Brough of Birsay is an uninhabited tidal island off the north west coast of the Mainland. The earliest settlement was in the 6th Century by Christian missionaries. In the background is the Loch of Boardhouse where the Barony Hotel is situated on the shoreline.

The Broch of Gurness is an Iron Age broch village overlooking Eynhallow Sound. Settlement began somewhere between 500 and 200BC and lasted until 100AD when it was abandoned and the ditches filled in. The site continued to be used until the 8th century.

Kitchener's Memorial is a crenellated tower built by public subscription in 1926 to honour the memory of Lord Kitchener. He along with 554 officers and men died when HMS Hampshire sank off the Marwick coast on 5th June 1916.

The Ring of Brodgar is a Neolithic henge and stone circle 104m in diameter and is the 3rd largest in Britain. It is thought to have been erected between 2500BC and 2000BC.

The Barony Hotel is a family run hotel which stands on the shores of the Boardhouse Loch in Birsay. It is surrounded by 3 excellent bird reserves and is close to 4 other trout fishing lochs.

Archaeological sites are abundant in Orkney, a few of which are near us. The shores and cliffs around Birsay are ideal for walking. Most of our rooms are en suite and all have tea/coffee making facilities. We have a large lounge bar from which we serve from our extensive supper menu. Beef, fish and shellfish feature high on our menu as it is all locally produced. Most of our dishes are prepared to order to maintain the freshness of our local produce. Archaeological sites are abundant in Orkney. You are never very far away from one wherever you are and they are all well worth a visit. New sites are being excavated on all the time. The Ness of Brodgar won the 2012 Andante Travels Archaeology Award.

Bird Watching
We are surrounded by 3 excellent bird reserves and also have cliff walks nearby to see the seabird colonies.

Boardhouse Loch is only a short walk down our lawn where we have boats & motors for hire.
Also within easy reach of the hotel are the 3 other main fishing lochs of Harray, Swanney and Hundland.

Walking
The shores and cliffs around Birsay are ideal for walking.
